Media Release By Phakama Eastern Cape
August 29, 2025

The Eastern Cape stands at a crossroads. Despite being one of the most historically rich provinces in South Africa, it continues to suffer from chronic underdevelopment, failing infrastructure, collapsing health and education systems, mass unemployment, and persistent corruption and crime.
Despite the deep poverty, high unemployment, and collapsing infrastructure in the Eastern Cape, provincial and municipal departments have consistently returned billions of rands in unspent funds back to the National Treasury.
Communities across the province face daily struggles for basic services such as water, electricity, sanitation, housing, and safety. Rural towns are neglected, youth are locked out of opportunities, and citizens have lost faith in the current political establishment and the vehicles available to them.
It is this reality that has necessitated a new people-powered and pro-development civic movement, Phakama EC, to rise up as a collective response.
Over the past months, Phakama EC has conducted a consultative process, lobbying and engaging directly with citizens across the province. The outcome has been clear: residents are tired of politics and demand a new path forward. More than 400 citizens have already pledged their support to the founding of this movement, rooted in accountability, dignity, and sustainable development.
It is against this background that Phakama EC will officially launch at a People’s Imbizo in King William’s Town. This historic gathering will mark the beginning of a united effort to rescue, revive, and rebuild the Eastern Cape.
The Movement’s Core Commitments
Holding leaders accountable to deliver basic services such as water, electricity, sanitation, and housing.
Placing youth at the centre by demanding investment in education, skills development, and job creation.
Championing rural development and advocating for sustainable infrastructure to uplift neglected communities.
Fighting corruption, crime, and mismanagement by ensuring every rand meant for the people is used for the people.
